Common Google LSA Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Most problems in Google Local Services Ads accounts are not unique. The same mistakes appear in account after account, often set up during initial configuration and left uncorrected because the account is generating some leads and no one has looked closely at whether it is performing as well as it could be. Here are the most common errors we see when auditing LSA accounts.

Mistake 1: Wrong Service Categories
Service categories are how Google matches your listing to searches. Selecting categories too broadly) adding every vaguely related category hoping to increase volume (generates calls for services you do not offer. This wastes budget, frustrates callers, and produces a lead history full of mismatched contacts that can affect account standing.
The fix: select only the categories that map directly to the services you can fulfill, and remove anything generating off-topic leads.

Mistake 2: Service Area Set Too Wide:
A service area that extends far beyond where you actually work creates calls from locations you cannot serve efficiently and often cannot serve at all. You pay for those leads, and if you dispute them correctly, the dispute may be approved, but the better solution is configuring the service area accurately from the start so out-of-area calls are less frequent.
The fix: map your service area to where your team can realistically respond within your normal response window.

Mistake 3: Not Reviewing or Disputing Leads:
Leads that do not meet Google’s billing criteria are disputable (but only within a set time window after the lead is received. Businesses that do not regularly review their leads miss that window, and charges for invalid leads are never recovered.
The fix: review leads on a weekly schedule and file disputes within the eligible window for any leads that qualify.

Mistake 4: Letting the Google Verified Badge Lapse:
Insurance certificates expire. Background check renewal windows close. When a verification document expires and is not renewed, the badge can lapse) and a lapsed badge can pause your ads or significantly reduce your visibility.
The fix: track renewal dates for all verification documents and submit renewals before documents expire.

Mistake 5: Missing Calls:
Google tracks responsiveness as a ranking factor. An account that consistently misses incoming calls (because the phone is not answered, because hours are set incorrectly, because the team is too busy) accumulates a responsiveness record that affects ranking over time. And missed calls that met billing criteria are still charged.
The fix: make sure someone is available to answer calls during your listed business hours, and set hours accurately to match when you can actually respond.

Mistake 6: Setting the Budget Too High Too Soon:
A common impulse is to maximize the budget at launch to get as many leads as possible. Without an optimized account (accurate categories, correct service area, clean lead management), a high budget on a misconfigured account generates a large volume of poor-quality leads at significant cost.
The fix: start with a conservative budget, review lead quality for the first 30 to 60 days, and scale the budget up based on what the data shows.

Mistake 7: Ignoring the Review Profile:
Reviews are a ranking factor in LSA. Businesses that run LSA but never actively request reviews from satisfied customers fall behind competitors that have a consistent review generation process.
The fix: build review requests into your post-service workflow (a text or email asking satisfied customers to leave a Google review after every job.

Mistake 8: Not Checking for Old Badge Terminology
Many businesses have website copy, business cards, or social media profiles that still reference “Google Guaranteed” or “Google Screened.” These are no longer Google’s current terms. The badge is now called Google Verified, and the former money-back guarantee has been discontinued for services booked after December 7, 2025.
The fix: update all marketing materials to use current terminology and remove any reference to the consumer money-back guarantee.
