The Google LSA Verification Process Explained

Before Google Local Services Ads can go live, your business must complete a verification process. The process confirms that your business is legitimate, appropriately insured, and, depending on your category, (properly licensed and staffed by individuals who have passed background checks. Completing this process successfully earns your business the Google Verified badge.

The timeline varies by category and how well-prepared your documentation is. Understanding each step before you begin is the most effective way to avoid the delays that are most common.

Step 1: Create Your Google Local Services Ads Account
Verification begins when you start the LSA account creation process at ads.google.com/local-services-ads. You enter basic business information (name, address, service categories, service area) and Google confirms whether your category and location are eligible for the program. If eligible, the verification steps appear in your account.

Step 2: Link Your Google Business Profile
A verified Google Business Profile is required to proceed. If your profile exists and is already verified, Google will prompt you to link it to your new LSA account. If your profile is not verified or has accuracy issues, resolve those before continuing. Your Business Profile name, address, and phone number should be consistent with the information you entered in your LSA account.

Step 3: Business Background Check
Google uses a third-party provider to run background checks on business owners and, in some cases, key employees or technicians. The check typically covers criminal history and identity verification. The individual being checked must initiate the background check through an invitation sent to their email address. Background checks usually complete within a few days but can take longer depending on the jurisdiction and the completeness of the information provided.

Step 4: Insurance Submission
You must submit a current certificate of general liability insurance. The certificate must show the legal business name exactly as it appears in the LSA account, a policy number, coverage dates that are current, and minimum coverage amounts that meet Google’s requirements for your category. Small discrepancies (a business name formatted differently on the certificate than in the account, an expired policy date) are among the most common causes of verification delays. Have your insurance agent issue a current certificate specifically for this submission.

Step 5: License Submission (Category-Dependent)
Many categories require a business license, contractor’s license, or professional credential. For home services, this often means a contractor’s license issued by your state or local authority. For professional services (law, finance, real estate), it means bar membership, professional certifications, or state-issued licenses. Google reviews these credentials and verifies they are active and match the information in your account. Some jurisdictions require additional documentation.

Step 6: Google Review
Once all documentation is submitted, Google’s team reviews the submission. In some cases this is automated; in others it involves manual review. The review period can range from a few days to several weeks. If additional documentation is needed, Google will send a notification through your account requesting it. Responding to these requests promptly delays the verification timeline.

Step 7: Badge Awarded (Ads Go Live)
When verification is complete, your Google Verified badge is awarded, and your LSA profile becomes eligible to appear in search results. At this point, your budget must be active for your listing to show. PX Media reviews all account settings before this point to ensure everything is configured correctly for the first day the account is live.

What Causes Verification to Stall

The most frequent causes of verification delays are: insurance certificates with incorrect business names or expired dates, background check invitations that were not completed promptly by the individuals named, license information that does not match what Google’s system expects, and not responding quickly to follow-up documentation requests from Google. PX Media reviews documentation before submission to catch these issues before they reach Google’s review queue.

Maintaining Verification After the Badge Is Earned

Verification is not permanent. Insurance certificates expire, background check renewals are required periodically, and license renewals need to be documented when they occur. Failing to maintain current documentation causes the badge to lapse, which can pause your ads until the documentation is updated. PX Media tracks renewal dates and notifies clients in advance so documentation is renewed before lapses occur.

PX Media manages the complete LSA verification process from documentation review to badge maintenance.
